I recently started dating one of my close guy friends. Earlier in the year I learned that his family was extremely poor. In fact, his was one of the families in the community that received gifts and food from my church for Christmas.

I'm not sure how to react to this, since I am from a well-off middle class family. It doesn't affect our relationship a lot, but just enough to make me wonder what to do about things including money, such as going to the movies or out to lunch. Any ideas?

    Just Hang Out.
Just because the guy doesn't have much money doesn't mean that you two can't have fun. There's lots of things you can do to have fun that don't involve money. You could just hang out somewhere with friends or watch movies at your houses, or even go swim at a lake (if you have one). The main thing is to just spend quality time together. You shouldn't let money interphere with hanging out.

    Well...
Do you have a dollar or 2 dollar theatre in your town? I always go to it instead of the 10 dollar one, even though I'm not poor. As for going out to eat, my boyfriend never takes me to nice places. If we get lunch, it's at McDonalds or Burger King. It doesn't have to be nice. Hope I helped some

I hope you don't think it matters...
It shouldn't matter how much money he has. Is he okay with you paying for meals and things like that? On a date, you could sort of do it backwards, as if you're the one taking him out, and you could pick the place and pay for the food. You could also go to the dollar theatre, or the local park where you could take pictures of each other, or you two could just hang out and make crafts like homemade picture frames for your pics. The possibilities really are endless. :-)

    Other Types of Wealth
Don't ever let money ruin a great relationship. If you two love each other more than words can say, and more than money can buy, then he is worth it. Once you realize it, money is nothing compared to spiritual, emotional, friendship, and love richness.

    Inexpensive date
A really fun and inexpensive date is just to hang out and do stuff like take pictures. It's not so expensive and it's a great way to make memories that will last forever.

    Make money not an option
Try doing things that don't cost any money. My boyfriend and I both work, and we both have bills, and money can be really tight. We normally will get a pizza, rent a movie, stay home and watch a movie together, or we'll watch one on TV. Or sometimes we'll go down to the river. That's completely free and romantic. Or we'll go to parks and swing on the swings like children. Cook dinner and have a romantic night in or something like that. Being together doesn't have to cost money. My boyfriend's family wasn't always well off, but that didn't matter to me. I like him, not how much money he doesn't have.

It shouldn't affect you guys if he doesn't make it a big deal
if it took you this long to realize how poor his family is, it means that he doesn't want people to know and make a big deal out of it. The number one thing is that you don't let this change the way you feel about going to his house or about your relationship. You should let him be the one to bring it up and when he's comfortable talking about it, you can listen. Otherwise, just be tactful when it comes to stuff where moneys involved. Remember that money is just one part of his life, and your relationship is built on more than that.

    Not a big deal.
Rent a movie and watch it at home. It shouldn't matter if he's poor or not. My fiance's family can't even afford food half of the time, and we've been together for 4 years. There are ways around not having money. If he gets even a part-time job, that helps a lot. Don't be shallow about it. If you're worried about him not being able to pay for you and get you gifts and things like that, then you're really not looking for the right things in a relationship.
