Article Image While the exact cause of AD/HD is unknown, research suggests the disorder is caused by a combination of genes. There also appears to be a lack of dopamine (an important chemical in the brain) in people suffering with AD/HD. One thing is certain, however, AD/HD is not caused by eating too much sugar, bad parenting, poor schools or too much TV. These are just some of the myths and misconceptions many people have about the disorder.

AD/HD is not curable, but it is treatable. Medication like Ritalin, Dexedrine and Adderall (stimulant medications) have been shown to be the most effective in treating people with AD/HD. Therapy and counseling can also help those with AD/HD by dealing with the emotional aspects of the disorder.

Behavior coaches can offer support by working with the person to develop coping skills or strategies, like better organizational methods.
